Tuberculosis Vs Ayurveda

In the ancient world, Ayurveda, the traditional Indian system of medicine, offered profound insights into the understanding and treatment of diseases.

Rajyakshama, known as tuberculosis in modern medical terminology, has plagued humanity for centuries. Tuberculosis is a chronic bacterial infection caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis mainly affecting lungs and sometimes other parts like intestine, bone etc. It is a serious medical condition that absolutely require urgent medical attention and proper treatment, but ayurveda along with modern medication can prove to be elixir to the diseased. As Ayurveda says Rajyakshama involves emaciation of body tissues. It can help improve general wellbeing of body and enhance the functioning of immune system.

Let's dive into Charak Samhita, one of the foundational texts of Ayurveda, which provides a holistic and comprehensive approach to addressing Rajyakshama.

Charak Samhita categorizes it under the group of diseases known as "Mahagada," emphasizing its chronic and severe nature. According to Charak, Rajyakshama is caused by the vitiation of the Vata and Kapha doshas, leading to the impairment of Agni (digestive fire) and the accumulation of Ama (toxins) in the body.

Now let's take a look at its treatment principles:

1. Balancing Doshas:

Charak emphasizes the importance of restoring doshic balance in treating Rajyakshama. The treatment involves pacifying the aggravated Vata and Kapha doshas through a combination of diet, lifestyle modifications, and herbal remedies.

2. Detoxification (Panchakarma):

Charak Samhita advocates Panchakarma, a set of therapeutic procedures aimed at eliminating toxins from the body. Vamana (therapeutic vomiting) and Virechana (purgation) are recommended to purify the body and remove excess doshas, thus alleviating the symptoms of Rajyakshama.

3. Herbal Formulations:

Charak prescribes a variety of herbal formulations to address the specific imbalances associated with Rajyakshama. Here are some key herbal ingredients and formulations commonly used:

Yashtimadhu (Licorice):

Properties: Yashtimadhu is known for its anti-inflammatory and expectorant properties.

Benefits: It helps soothe the respiratory tract, reduce inflammation, and alleviate cough symptoms associated with Rajyakshama.

Sitopaladi Churna:

Ingredients: Sitopaladi contains sugar, bamboo manna, long pepper, cardamom, and cinnamon.

Properties: It is known for its antitussive, expectorant, and immune-modulatory properties.

Benefits: Sitopaladi is commonly used to alleviate cough, reduce inflammation, and support respiratory health.

Talisadi Churna:

Ingredients: Talisadi is a combination of bamboo manna, cardamom, cinnamon, and sugar.

Properties: It has anti-inflammatory and bronchodilator properties.

Benefits: Talisadi Churna is used to relieve respiratory symptoms, including cough and breathlessness.

Amalaki (Emblica officinalis):

Properties: Amalaki is a potent antioxidant and immune-modulator.

Benefits: It helps in strengthening the immune system, promoting overall health, and aiding in the recovery from respiratory infections.

Haridra (Turmeric):

Properties: Turmeric is known for its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties.

Benefits: It helps in reducing inflammation, supporting the immune system, and accelerating the healing process.

4. Dietary Guidelines:

Dietary modifications play a crucial role in Charak's approach to treating Rajyakshama. A diet that balances the doshas and supports the digestive fire is recommended. Warm, easily digestible foods and the avoidance of cold, heavy, and mucus-forming foods are emphasized.

5. Lifestyle Recommendations:

Charak emphasizes the importance of a balanced lifestyle, including regular exercise, adequate rest, and stress management. Yoga and pranayama (breath control exercises) are also suggested to enhance respiratory function and overall well-being. One can practice pranayama like anulom-vilom, bhrasrika, kapaalbhati and yoga asanas like Bhujangasana, Makarasana, Padahastasana, Setu-bandhasana etc.

It's important to note that Ayurvedic treatments are often personalized based on an individual's constitution (Prakriti) and the specific imbalance of doshas. Therefore, it is advisable to consult with a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner to receive a tailored treatment plan for Rajyakshama or any other health condition. Additionally, Ayurvedic herbal formulations are often part of a holistic approach that includes dietary and lifestyle recommendations for comprehensive wellness.

Origin of AYURVEDA

Ayurveda is made up of two sanskrit terms, ayur + veda. Ayur means life or age, and the meaning of Veda is science or knowledge. So the literal meaning of Ayurveda comes out to be, The Science of Life. Lord Dhanvantari No one can tell the exact age of Ayurveda, but as the record goes, it is been  practiced in India for around 5000 years, i.e, practiced since 1500 B.C. - 500 B.C.. It is the oldest line of treatment, still surviving and helping in treatment, very effectively. Despite the fact that most of the documentations related to it are destroyed or lost, due to wars or famines or due to any other reasons, it is still very effective way of treatment, and is preferred over western medicine, not only by indians but in western countries also. Its horizons are widening day by day. As per the textbooks, Ayurveda is first remembered by Lord Brahma, and then passed on to his mind born son, Prajapati Daksha. He passed on the knowledge, as it is, to Ashwini Kumaras ( The pri...
